Warrants for Information Stored On Servers Outside the US
It has been reported by ARS Technica that Google has stopped challenging most warrants issued by US judges in which the data requested is stored on servers outside the US. Complying with warrants for information outside the US is consistent with a number of US cases at the trial court level and the position of the Trump administration, but is inconsistent with a 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decision in a Microsoft case relied upon by many companies. The issue may have to be resolved by the US Supreme Court. How Google will deal with the foreign legal consequences of transmitting personal data back to the US in order to comply with the US warrants remains to be seen.
If you have information stored on servers located overseas you may want to follow this matter closely.
