Robert L. Rothman is a Principal of Privacy Associates International LLC. From 2002 to 2009 he was the Chief Privacy Officer of General Motors Corporation. In that capacity he was responsible for the company’s global privacy policies and compliance activities. Mr. Rothman established a Global Privacy Center comprised of GM representatives in various disciplines and geographic areas and organized a network of privacy contacts in business units around the world. He managed the creation of contracts, training and auditing programs, as well as various internal policies and processes, to assure compliance with domestic and foreign privacy laws and regulations. Mr. Rothman worked on cutting edge privacy issues such as RFIDs and OnStar as well as a broad range of domestic and foreign legislative initiatives. He actively represented GM in various privacy organizations, including the Conference Board Council of Chief Privacy Officers, the Global Privacy Alliance, the Center for Information Policy Leadership, and the National Business Coalition on e-Commerce and Privacy.
Mr. Rothman held a variety of other positions during his career at GM, including Vice President and General Counsel of General Motors International Operations and General Counsel of General Motors Europe, both in Zurich, Switzerland. He was General Counsel of Delphi Automotive Systems in Troy, Michigan and led the legal function of eGM, GM’s global e-commerce unit, in Detroit.
Mr. Rothman holds a JD from Ohio State University, an MBA from Duke University, and an AB in Chinese from the University of Michigan. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at Wayne State University Law School teaching Privacy Law as well as at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Auburn Hills, MI teaching international law courses. Mr. Rothman is a frequent speaker at legal, business and government functions and was named a Best Privacy Advisor for 2010 in Computerworld Magazine.
